There are no coincidences, only encounters…
Alice is a passionate “nose” – a creator of perfumes. On Christmas Eve 1950, something happens that will change Alice’s life forever: a fortune teller makes a mysterious prediction about her future. “The most important man in your life was walking behind you a few moments ago. To find him, you will have to undertake a long journey and meet six people who will lead you to him. You have two lives in you, Alice. The life you know and another one, which is waiting for you.”
Alice’s neighbor, Mr. Daldry, notices the unrest that the fortune teller provokes in Alice, and mysteriously encourages her to take the predictions seriously, eventually convincing her to leave. To make sure that Alice does not change her mind, the eccentric bachelor even agrees to accompany her on the journey.
An odyssey into the heart of Europe in the 1950s, into lives that are haunted by the demons of a recent past. A story of friendship and things left unsaid.
“The Strange Journey of Mr. Daldry is full of poetry, and full of spirit. In this funny and endearing novel, the author continues to weave through the themes he enjoys so much – the intersection between friendship and romance, humility and courage, the true love of others, and self-fulfillment.”
“One of Marc Levy’s best novels to date.”
“We all fell in love with Mr. Daldry, and we want the same man at home!… We turned the pages holding our breath until the very end!… Dialogue, humor, suspense: it’s all there!”
“Once again, Marc Levy reveals the magnitude of his storyteller talent.”
“One of Marc Levy’s best novels to date, and a great success. I loved the parts about friendship between a man and woman, and thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Daldry’s take on love. All [female] readers will dream of going to Istanbul with Mr. Daldry… A lovely book, that takes the reader on an enthralling journey.”
“A fine-tuned, well-executed intrigue, which moves at a good pace. Full of humor and humanity, it raises questions about identity, about one’s story and past. A book full of poetry, about the quest for true happiness.”
“The French writer Marc Levy has long wanted to write a book that would blend the world of perfumes with characters he has had in his head for a very long time. That’s exactly what he did with The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury, an exotic and sensual quest where friendship gives way to love.”
“Marc Levy is back with a new novel with an original and romantic storyline.”
